STARKVILLE, Miss. – After earning All-SEC Second Team honors last season, Mississippi State junior Mate Cutura caught the attention of the tennis community. On Tuesday, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized Cutura as No. 80 overall in its latest singles poll.
“Mate has been a big part of the program we are building here at Mississippi State,” second-year coach Matt Roberts said. “He's the model student-athlete for what we want in our program and to see him be recognized in the ITA National Rankings after an impressive first year here is something we're very proud of.”
The No. 80 ranking marks the highest of the junior's career.
The ITA also announced the field for the 2015 ITA All-American Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Play begins on Oct. 3 with prequalifying singles before moving on to qualifying play on Oct. 5 and then to the main draw on Oct. 8-12.
For the Maroon and White, five Bulldogs will be featured in the 2015 ITA All-American field. Junior Rishab Agarwal headlines the group, earning the first-alternate spot on the qualifying list.
Freshmen Niclas Braun, Trevor Foshey, Lucas Sanchez and junior Vaughn Hunter will also travel to Tulsa in October to compete in the prequalifying singles.
“Once again, this is another chance to find out what our strengths are as a team and what we need to work on,” Roberts said. “This is one of our major fall tournaments and these guys will get experience against some of the best in collegiate tennis. We're excited to get these guys back on the court against top competition.”
