HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Clay Homan's Mississippi State men's golf team opens its season on a familiar course Monday, taking part in the Sam Hall Intercollegiate for the seventh-straight year.
The two-day, 54-hole event tees off Monday at 8:30 a.m. with 36 holes at the par-71 Hattiesburg Country Club.
Including MSU, the 15-team field features Arkansas State, Jackson State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, ULM, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Middle Tennessee, Southeastern Louisiana, UTSA and host Southern Miss.
“It's exciting to start up another year, and our guys are looking forward to getting out there and competing,” Homan, MSU's 13th-year coach, said. “We have many of the same players back from a year ago, but a year has made a big difference in most of them.”
The Bulldogs return eight letterwinners, including senior Ben Wood who won two tournaments in 2014-15.
Joining Wood at the top of the State lineup is junior Zimbabwe native Ben Follet-Smith.
Sophomore Taylor Grant, who recorded two Top 30 finishes last year, adds another player with collegiate experience to the lineup.
Homan has two talented freshman rounding out the Bulldog lineup. Ross Bell, a Madison, Miss., native, sees his first collegiate action after redshirting last season, while heralded signee Severin Soller will don the Maroon & White for the first time.
Sophomore Johnny Newnham will play as an individual.
“In golf, maturity plays such a big role. Although we still have a fairly young team, we have a poised group who I expect to get better and better,” Homan said.
