Perfect Day On Pitch Leads to 2-0 Win For Bulldogs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Propelled by two first-half goals, Mississippi State turned in its best performance of the season to down Lipscomb 2-0 on a perfect fall afternoon in Nashville.
“In terms of combining our expectations and executing our game plan, I thought this was a great performance from our team,” head coach Aaron Gordon said. “Sunday wins are always hard to come by, because you have to have extra focus when coming off a Friday game. After the tough loss to Vanderbilt, we had a great performance on the heels of Friday night and I am happy with how we came out today.”
MSU (2-5-1) was clearly not afraid of missing coming out of the gate, with 11 of its 22 total shots coming in the opening half. The multitude of chances would eventually payoff after senior Shelby Jordan connected on a header in the 20th minute.
“Shelby had a really good first half for us,” Gordon said. “She came out and attacked exceptionally and gave us a lot of energy. She was on the end of a corner on the back post and buried it.”
The goal for Jordan came off a nice pass from sophomore Eubanks, who slid inside the box to stun the Bison defenders off the corner play.
The Maroon and White would strike again in the 37th minute, after freshman Morgan Mills headed a ball to a blitzing Kennadi Carbin for the dagger.
State would head into the half with a 2-0 lead.
“We got 18 shots on Friday night and I thought that was something we could build off of for this game,” Gordon said. “That's something we discussed pregame and it's about continuing that attacking mentality, which we did perfectly today. When you get multiple shots from multiple players, its gives you a freedom to attack and not be afraid to miss.”
MSU turned in five more shots on goal in the second half to finish with 12 on the day, while the Bulldogs controlled the final 45 minutes to hold on to the win 2-0.
Between the posts, sophomore Tanya de Souza earned her third clean sheet of the season. She had an easier night than her 10 save performance on Friday, as the Paris native picked up one save against the Bison.
The loss placed Lipscomb at 4-2-3 on the season, with the Bison's record against southeastern conference foes falling to 0-2-1 this year.
Gordon's squad will have an extended break until next Sunday, when the Bulldogs hit the road to face Arkansas on Sept. 20 at 12 p.m.
