STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fall officially arrives for the men's tennis team this Friday, as Mississippi State travels to Athens, Ga., for the Southern Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia.
The four-day event will feature 28 teams, fielding 174 participants. Fellow Southeastern Conference members Arkansas, Georgia and Kentucky will join the Bulldogs in Athens, with Clemson, Georgia Tech, Memphis and Virginia Tech also adding to the 28-team field.
The round of 64 and 32 will be played on Friday, with the round of 16 and quarterfinals following on Saturday. The semifinal is scheduled for Sunday, followed by Monday's final.
State sends three participants for the weekend, with freshmen Trevor Foshey and Lucas Sanchez, along with junior Vaughn Hunter, getting their first taste of major collegiate tennis.
“I am so excited to get some of our fresh faces quality matches under their belts,” second-year coach Matt Roberts said. “The Southern Intercollegiate is a big-time fall tournament that is at a great SEC facility, and our guys couldn't have a better stage to start their Bulldog careers.”
Hunter competes in the first singles division, with his first action coming at 7 a.m. CT, on Friday against Nicolas Guillon of Mercer. The winner of the match faces top-seeded Wayne Montgomery of UGA in the round of 32.
Foshey also plays in the first singles division, as the freshman faces Stetson's Loic Blanco at 8:30 a.m.
Sanchez will have a bye as he competes in the second singles division. The freshman plays the winner of Egor Panyushkin (Saint Leo) and Guille Nicolas (Tennessee Tech) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
“This tournament will be a good measuring stick of where our guys are,” Roberts said. “After this weekend we will have a good idea on what we need to improve on.”
In doubles action Foshey and Hunter will team up to face Florida Atlantic's Boudaroua and Morlin-Kougoucheff at 8 p.m. to open the round of 64.
