STARKVILLE, Miss. – Second-year coach Matt Roberts added another gem to his already stellar 2015-2016 recruiting class with the announcement of Portuguese standout Nuno Borges, who signed with Mississippi State on Wednesday.
Hailing from Maia, Portugal, Borges comes to Starkville as one of the most highly-touted players in Mississippi State history.
Borges comes to Starkville as the 44th ranked ITF junior, winning three ITF singles' titles as well as two doubles' titles. He has compiled 53 ITF singles wins over his young career.
The Portugal native earned a 1554 overall ATP ranking, adding to his impressive profile. In 2014, he rose to 1518 in doubles. Borges also claimed a national title in the U18 division for his home country, rising to No. 1 in Portugal.
“This is huge for our program because Nuno will be able to come in and play at a high level right away,” Roberts said. “He is our type of guy. He has great character and is someone who likes the kind of environment we have here in Starkville. He loves the small town vibe and he will get along great with our team.”
Borges will have three of the four grand slams under his belt in 2015 after competing at Wimbledon and Roland Garros earlier in the year, with the U.S. Open coming later in the season.
“The reason I chose MSU was because we created a great relationship,” Borges said. “The high level of tennis they have was also important. I hope to have a lot of victories with MSU and reach the best place possible, while being a great teammate.”
The six-foot-two righty joins an already impressive recruiting class that features four top-notch talents in Niclas Braun, Trevor Foshey, Vaughn Hunter and Lucas Sanchez.
“Nuno will be one of the best players to come into college this year,” second-year assistant Tanner Stump said. “He has already proven himself as one of the top players in Europe and is competing against guys who are skipping college and going straight to pro.”
The Bulldogs will open fall play at the Southern Intercollegiate on Sept. 11-14, hosted by the University of Georgia.
