Bougard Sets SEC Heptathlon Record To Earn First
May 16, 2015 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Going into the final day of the 2015 SEC Championships, both Mississippi State teams are in the Top 10, with Erica Bougard setting the SEC Championships meet record and the school record in the heptathlon.
Recording the highest point finish in SEC Championship history in the heptathlon, Bougard earned her victory with 6,250 points. Tying her personal-best in the long jump, Bougard had a leap of 20-11.75 to also finish first individually in the event before going into the javelin throw where she placed 10th with a throw of 103-10.
Despite the low finish, Bougard bounced back strong, bringing home another individual victory, running 2:11 in the 800m run to claim her overall first-place finish. Bougard's point total is also the fifth-best heptathlon finish in NCAA history and currently leads the nation. Bougard's first-place overall finish will send her on to nationals in the heptathlon.
"It's exciting and I really felt the crowd today," Bougard said. "They really pushed me today to finish. Having a lot of people here and having my family here really helped me enjoy it and have fun. Now I have a month of training to get ready for nationals."Â
Qualifying for the 100m hurdle finals on Saturday, Bougard (13.04) and Ste'yce McNeil (13.28) finished second and sixth, respectively.
Also on the track qualifying for Saturday's finals were Rhianwedd Price and Marta Freitas in the 1500m run preliminaries. Price ran a time of 4:19.19 to finish first overall. Running 4:23.89, Freitas finished first in her heat and second overall.
In the 400m dash, Alfred Larry qualified with a time of 45.93 to finish third overall. On the women's side, Shayla Luckett finished fourth with a time of 53.10 to also qualify.Â
Placing second for the second year in a row in the steeplechase, Cornelia Griesche ran a time of 10:04. Emma Neigel ran a time of 11:33.34 to finish 19th.Â
The MSU men's team is currently tied for sixth place with 16 points, while the women are in seventh with 18. The third and final day of the 2015 SEC Outdoor Championships will begin with the men's and women's triple jump at 1 p.m. CT.Â
