Bulldogs Mount Rally To Clinch Series Win at Arkansas
April 05, 2015 | Softball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Once again trailing late, Mississippi State (28-10, 7-7 SEC) captured the late innings and mounted a rally to capture a 3-2 win over Arkansas (14-23, 0-11 SEC) on Sunday at Bogle Park.
The Bulldogs now have 14 come-from-behind wins this season and 49 under head coach Vann Stuedeman.
“Another great team win today,” Stuedeman said. “Good pitching, solid defense and a few timely hits, it was just a solid outing all around. Cassady Knudsen got her first collegiate win with three scoreless innings of work and big hits from Caroline Seitz and Mackenzie Toler lifted us late when we needed it.”
In the home half of the first, the Razorbacks recorded their first run of the weekend on a solo home run with two outs.
Sophomore Katie Anne Bailey helped the Bulldogs answer as she crushed a pitch to lead off the second with a solo shot to left field, tying the game at one.
Arkansas would use another solo homer, this time in the second, to retake the lead and set the score at 2-1.
Seemingly due for a big inning after having placed double-digit runners on base through the first five innings, the State batters delivered in the sixth. After sophomore Amanda Ivy drew a one-out walk, sophomore Caroline Seitz ripped a double into the gap in left center, scoring Ivy and tying the game at two.
Sophomore Mackenzie Toler followed Seitz with a single through the right side to plate Seitz and put MSU ahead 3-2, their first lead of the contest.
Looking to slam the door shut after freshman Cassady Knudsen tossed three shutout innings, sophomore Alexis Silkwood threw the final two innings to record the save and clinch the 3-2 win for State.
Knudsen (1-0) recorded her first collegiate win in three innings, having allowed three hits and struck out two. Silkwood recorded her second save of the season as she struck out four in the game's final two innings. Allison Stewart (4-5) suffered the relief loss for Arkansas as she allowed two runs on two hits in three innings.
The Bulldogs will go for the three-game series sweep in the series finale on Monday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game will air live nationally on the SEC Network.
