State Offense Explodes To Seal Sweep at Arkansas
April 07, 2015 | Softball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In front of a national television audience, Mississippi State (29-10, 8-7 SEC) used a total team effort on both sides of the ball, including late-inning dominance to collect a 16-4 win over Arkansas (14-24, 0-12 SEC) in six innings on Monday night at Bogle Park.
The Bulldogs clinched their second Southeastern Conference series victory of the season and their first conference sweep of 2015.
Having delivered the game-winning RBI on Sunday, sophomore Mackeznie Toler provided another big hit for the Bulldogs, this time in the top of the third as her RBI single brought sophomore Amanda Ivy across, putting MSU up 1-0.
In the top of the fourth with junior Loryn Nichols on first, senior Julia Echols rocked the suburbs with a two-run home run to deep left field, making it 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Arkansas ended its 17.2 inning scoring drought vs. State in the home half of the fourth as a home run with a runner on cut into the MSU deficit and brought the score to 3-2.
Just as they have done numerous times throughout the season, the Bulldog hitters answered an opponent's score with their own. Sophomore Katie Anne Bailey was the provider as she obliterated a pitch to straight-away center field, making it a 4-2 game with her solo homer.
The would be just the beginning as an Arkansas fielding error with two outs in the fifth allowed MSU to plate another five runs on just two hits to blow the game wide open and push its lead to 9-2.
The sixth inning would be the most impressive of the night for the Bulldogs as six hits powered a seven-run inning that put the score at 16-2.
With freshman Cassady Knudsen in to throw the final inning, the Razorbacks added two more before falling to the final score of 16-4.
Sophomore Alexis Silkwood (21-7) went five innings and allowed two runs on three hits, while Haley Meinen (1-5) suffered the loss as she allowed 12 runs, two earned, on nine Bulldog hits.
State will return home for a mid-week game that will be recorded as non-conference vs. No. 2 LSU on Wednesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. CT. The game will air on SEC Network+.
