Slappers Shine In Road Win Over Georgia Southern
April 25, 2015 | Softball
STATESBORO, Ga. – It didn't take long for the Mississippi State softball team to jump on top of Georgia Southern, as the first pitch of the game left Julia Echols' bat, exited the ballpark, and put the Bulldogs well on their way to a victory.
Mississippi State improved to 33-16 with the 6-2 the victory over Georgia Southern, while the Eagles fell to 12-34 despite a late rally attempt.
The Bulldogs' slap-hitters led the way for the Maroon & White. Juniors Loryn Nichols and Kayla Winkfield each had three hits and combined to go for 6-for-7 on the afternoon.
"We did some really good things today," head coach Vann Stuedeman said. "Julia (Echols) led off the game with a home run and (Kayla) Winkfield and (Loryn) Nichols were on base all day combining for six of our 12 hits. They are so fun to watch because they both run so well and they are tough to defend. I am looking forward to toughness Sunday."
On the first pitch of the afternoon, Senior Julia Echols launched a solo shot over the right center field fence to push the Bulldog lead to 1-0 after one inning.
State led 5-0 after two innings with help from an RBI single by sophomore Amanda Ivy and a three-run homer by sophomore Caroline Seitz.
The Eagles plated one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing the Eagles within 5-1.
An infield single by junior Loryn Nichols in the top of the seventh, brought home Winkfield to push the lead for the Bulldogs back to five before Georgia Southern tallied one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as State defeated the Eagles, 6-2.
Sophomore pitcher Alexis Silkwood (23-12) earned the victory for the Bulldogs. Silkwood gave up two runs, only one earned, off four hits; she struck out three and walked two in her win. Kierra Camp (6-14) took the loss for Georgia Southern, surrendering five runs, all earned, on four hits.
MSU will close its two-game set with the Eagles on Sunday as first pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT.
