Baseball Drops Series Opener Against No. 6 Florida

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A four-run first inning was enough offense for No. 6 Florida Friday night.
Mississippi State battled back but could not overcome the early deficit, falling 6-3 in the opening game of a Super Bulldog Weekend Southeastern Conference series at Dudy Noble Field.
Florida improved to 29-10 overall and 10-6 in league play, while MSU fell to 22-17 and 6-10.
In the first inning, leadoff man Dalton Guthrie started things for Florida with a base hit. After a fly out, Harrison Bader lined a double. A walk to Peter Alonso loaded the bases. Josh Tobias followed with a three-run triple to right center and later scored on a ground ball out.
MSU got on the board with three runs in the fourth inning. Jake Vickerson started things with a leadoff single. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice reached Jacob Robson. After another strikeout, Wes Rea lined an RBI-single and John Holland followed with a two-run double. Holland was retired trying to extend the play into a triple.
Florida tacked on two insurance scores in the fifth inning. Alonso brought one home on an RBI-groundout and an RBI-double by Tobias plated the game's final run.
Florida ace Logan Shore (6-2) threw the complete-game six-hitter, with no walks and six strikeouts.
Lucas Laster (4-3) was lifted in the second inning and took the loss. Laster allowed six hits and four runs (all earned) in 1.1 innings of work. Levi Mintz pitched 3.1 innings in relief and allowed the other two runs. Trevor Fitts, Logan Elliot, Dakota Hudson and Daniel Brown followed to the mound for the Bulldogs.
MSU finished with six hits. Holland had multiple hits for the Bulldogs.
Florida finished with nine hits. Guthrie had three hits, while Richie Martin and Tobias each had two hits.
The series continues with a 2 p.m. start Saturday.
