No. 24 Bulldogs Smother Southeastern Louisiana In Five, 16-1
March 17, 2015 | Softball
HAMMOND, La. – Playing its first non-conference game in 13 days, the M ississippi State softball team (21-6, 3-3 SEC) used early firepower to cruise past Southeastern Louisiana, 16-1, (10-16, 5-1 Southland) on Tuesday at North Oak Park.
MSU set season-highs for runs and hits in a game with 16 and 18, respectively, vs. the Lions.
With a brand new starting lineup on display, the Bulldogs didn't wait long to jump out front as leadoff batter, sophomore Caroline Seitz sent a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left center to put State up 1-0. MSU would add to its lead as singles from junior Kayla Winkfield, sophomores Mackenzie Toler and Alexis Silkwood, a double from sophomore Amanda Ivy and alert base running from junior Loryn Nichols made it a 5-0 game.
The Lady Lions answered in the home half of the first by loading the bases and scoring one on a sacrifice fly to right, bringing the score to 5-1 after one inning.
State went back to work in the top half of the second as nine hits and alert base running opened the flood gates, resulting in a seven-run inning. MSU led 12-1 heading into the bottom of the second.
Stuedeman went to her bench in the later innings with the opportunity for younger Bulldogs to gain game experience. Freshman Carmen Carter led off the fifth and singled up the middle in the first-career at bat. A double in the gap off the bat of senior Katie Gentle scored Carter and pushed the lead to 13-1. Freshman Morgan Bell would make the lead swell further with two runners on as she recorded her first-career home run, putting State up 16-1, the count that would be the final.
Freshman Holly Ward (5-1) went four innings for MSU, allowing just one run on three hits, along with having struck out two. Freshman Cassady Knudsen entered in relief, closing out the game for State with two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Tori Stamper (2-3) received the loss for SLU as she got the start and was only able to last 0.1 innings before allowing five hits for five runs and being pulled from the circle.
State will get back to Southeastern Conference play this weekend in a road series with in-state rival Ole Miss. The three-game set will begin Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. CT from the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
