MSU Heats Up And Finishes Second After Round One
February 13, 2015 | Women's Golf
Tallahassee, Fla. – Following the recent three-month tournament break, the third-ranked Mississippi State women's golf team got off to excellent start in spring play with a 296 (+8) in the opening round of the Florida State Match-Up to conclude the day in second.
South Carolina, ranked No. 1, is first with a four-stroke lead.
“There were several positives from the first round,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “With a bit of rust, our attitude and body language was very positive, despite the 29-degree weather. I thought we struck the ball well, and with the fast greens, putted well.”
Three Bulldogs held places in the Top 20 after the first round was in the books today. Ally McDonald, Jessica Peng, and Rica Tse held their own as they helped pace the Bulldogs to a 2nd place card.
For the third tournament in a row, Ally McDonald led the way for the team as she was able to grab a 4th-place finish shooting even par at 72.
Behind McDonald was Jessica Peng, who carded a 73 to stand at 6th overall. The sophomore has been a key part of MSU's season, as she has finished in the Top 10 of every tournament thus far.
Placing 18th overall was senior Rica Tse at 74.
Sophomores, Ji Eun Baik and Izel Pieters both finished in the Top 50. Starting strong with six eagles in her first nine holes, Baik fired a 77. In her 2014-15 debut, Izel Pieters, a native of South Africa, closed with a 78 to stand at 44th.
The Bulldogs resume play tomorrow for the second round of the Florida State Seminole Match-Up.
