November 22, 2015 | Football
FAYETTEVILLE Ark. - In a wild back and forth affair, Mississippi State (8-3, 4-3 SEC) outlasted Arkansas (6-4, 4-3) to win 51-50 on the road Saturday night. A potential game-winning field goal attempt by Arkansas was blocked by Bulldog Beniquez Brown with 39 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 31-14 lead in the second quarter before the Razorbacks scored 28 unanswered points to take a two-score lead in the third period. MSU fought back as the lead changed three times before State finally got the go-ahead points on its final touchdown.“Wow!” head coach Dan Mullen exclaimed after the game. “What a game.”
Senior quarterback Dak Prescott set an all-time MSU record with 508 passing yards, totaling seven touchdowns on the night. Two Bulldog receivers went over 100 yards, with juniors Fred Ross (10 catches, 154 yard and two touchdowns) and Brandon Holloway (four catches, 101 yards and one touchdown) both hitting triple digits, while fellow junior receiver De'Runnya Wilson had 93 yards and a score of his own.
UA quarterback Brandon Allen had a big night of his own, passing for 406 yards and seven touchdowns. MSU actually out-rushed the Razorbacks 123-73 on a night highlighted by the two senior signal callers.
“As impressive a quarterbacking performance as you're gonna see in college football on both sidelines,” Mullen said.
Prescott's seventh touchdown came at the end of a six-play, 82-yard drive when he hit Ross in the middle of the field, capping an entertaining comeback.
“It's gotta be up there with one of the great finishes I've ever been involved in,” Mullen said.
Defensively, MSU was paced by the junior linebacker Brown with a team-high 12 tackles (1.5 for loss) in additon to the blocked field goal to clinch the victory for State. Richie Brown added 10 stops (1.5 for loss).
MSU hosts Ole Miss in the Battle for the Golden Egg to close out the regular season next Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium. The game will kickoff at 6:15 p.m. and be televised by ESPN2
