STARKVILLE, Miss – Adding to the signing of Griffin Agent this month, coach Clay Homan and the Mississippi State men's golf team inked Garrett Johnson on Wednesday.
“Garrett is an enthusiastic young man that fits the mold of what we look for in a student-athlete. The thing about Garrett is that he loves to compete and is a winner,” Homan said. “When you look at the scores he shoots and the fact that he is always in contention, you feel great about him wearing Maroon and White.”
Garrett Johnson, a Kimberly, Ala., native, has a scoring average of 71.85 for the year. Johnson's scoring average translated to a multitude of success on the course, as he won three Southeastern Junior Golf Tour tournaments and secured two third-place finishes in five starts.
Johnson placed eighth at the 2015 Alabama Men's State Amateur at Mountain Brook Country Club with rounds of 71-71-70-71.
He also tallied a third-place finish at the 2015 Future Tour Champions Tournament at Greenville Country Club. Johnson also recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes in the 2014 and 2015 AHSAA 5A State golf championship.
Johnson is currently ranked as the third-best player in Alabama for the 2016 class.
MSU returns to the links on Feb. 22 as it tees off the 2016 spring season with the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club.
