October 05, 2015 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – In his first tournament as a Bulldog, Mississippi State freshman Niclas Braun dispatched two opponents in quick order to continue his impressive run at the ITA All-American Championships as he moved on to the round of 32 for pre qualifying.
Braun began his successful day by defeating Toshiki Matsuya of Illinois, 6-4, 6-3, before downing Utah's Dan Little 6-1, 6-4. The German native has not dropped a set in his first three matches as a Bulldog.
“Niclas beat some quality opponents today and I'm proud of how he has competed,” MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. “He handled tough situations well and showed so much potential out on the court. I'm excited to see how Niclas and Rishab perform in the round of 32 tomorrow.”
Fellow Bulldog Rishab Agarwal will play in the first round of Monday's qualifying round, with Braun needing one win to advance. Agarwal will face Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern in the qualifying opening round, while Braun takes on Michael Riechmann of Texas on Monday morning.
Junior Vaughn Hunter earned a hard-fought victory over Louisville's Sean Donohue, 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-2 in his first match of the day, before falling to Illinois' Julian Childers, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Freshmen Trevor Foshey and Lucas Sanchez each pushed their opponents to the limit before falling to Chris Barrus of UCF, 6-1, 7-5 and William & Mary's Damon Niquet, 7-5, 6-4, respectively.
“I thought every player put forth great effort today,” Roberts said. “We have a young team so it's a process to keep improving and to keep moving forward. I thought this weekend has been a great experience for our whole team and it is evident that their training is paying off because we are seeing the results on the court.”
