October 04, 2015 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Opening day of the 2015 ITA All-American Championships couldn't have gone better for the Mississippi State men's tennis team, with all four competitors winning in straight sets to cap a perfect day on the court for the Bulldogs.
“Our guys had a great day on the courts and I was very pleased with their efforts,” MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. “I thought we grew a lot today with our individual games. Going undefeated was great, but we have to keep improving and switch our focus to tomorrow.”
The pre-qualifying day began with freshman Lucas Sanchez making short work of Illinois State's Jakub Eisner, 6-0, 7-5. The Brazilian native will face William and Mary's Damon Niquet on Sunday.
Junior Vaughn Hunter continued the winning on Saturday, as he downed Nebraska's Scott Elsass, 7-5, 6-1 to move on to the round of 128 in Tulsa. Hunter competes against Louisville's Sean Donohue tomorrow morning.
In his first appearance of the fall season, freshman Niclas Braun defeated New Mexico's Rodolfo Jauregui, 7-5, 6-1. Braun faces Illinois' Toshiki Matsuya in the second round on Sunday.
Freshman Trevor Foshey had the most thrilling victory of the day after winning 7-6 (3), 6-3, over Jason Proctor of Abilene Christian. Foshey fought back in the first set after falling behind 5-2, storming back to win in straight-sets.
"All four of our players were losing at some point today and they all fought back to win," Roberts said. "They are learning how to bounce back and handle themselves with confidence when the match becomes difficult. I'm looking forward to seeing how they compete tomorrow."
Pre-qualifying play continues on Sunday, with the qualifying round following Oct. 5-7.
