
No. 13 MSU Has Strong Effort In Maroon-White Scrimmage

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Preseason First Team All-SEC selection Victoria Vivians scored 20 points and freshman Teaira McCowan collected a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to pace the No. 13 Mississippi State women's basketball during its Maroon-White Scrimmage at Humphrey Coliseum Thursday night.
Juniors Breanna Richardson and Ketara Chapel added 14 and 10 points, respectively, while sophomore Kayla Nevitt tallied 13 points to go with six rebounds.
Freshman Jazzmun Holmes joined them in double figures with 10 points, while senior Sherise Williams tallied nine points and six rebounds. Chinwe Okorie and Blair Schaefer notched eight points apiece, while Okorie added seven rebounds.
McCowan, the Parade All-American out of Brenham, Texas, tallied seven points in the opening quarter to propel the Maroon to a 22-17 advantage. Junior Roshunda Johnson paced the White team in the quarter with six points.
Kayla Nevitt tried to rally the White squad back with seven points in the second quarter, but five points from McCowan and six from Vivians led the Maroon to a 44-35 edge at the break.
SEC Coach of the Year Vic Schaefer's squad combined forces to face the men's practice team for the final two stanzas. Down early, MSU rallied to take the quarter 28-19 thanks to seven points from Richardson and six each from Vivians and Schaefer.
The practice squad answered with a 26-15 advantage to take the lead in the fourth quarter. MSU made it a one-point contest on a Vivians 3-pointer with two seconds left, but the Bulldogs' rally fell short at the buzzer.
MSU split back into Maroon and White for a final five-minute overtime session. Vivians and Dillingham combined for five of the Maroon's six points as it edged out the two-point advantage.
Mississippi State hosts Mississippi College in a Nov. 10 exhibition before officially beginning the season with a 5:15 p.m. tip at the Hump against Samford on Nov. 13.
