MSU Heads To West Virginia To Play In The Mountaineer Intercollegiate
October 18, 2015 | Men's Golf
BRIDGEPORT, W. VA – For the first time in program history, the Mississippi State men's golf team will play in the state of West Virginia at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate.
The event was originally scheduled as a two-day, 54-hole tournament. Due to below-freezing temperatures anticipated on Monday morning, tee times have been pushed back to 10:30 a.m. CT and the holes shortened to 36 at the par- 72 Pete Dye Golf Club.
“Coming to West Virginia and competing at Pete Dye Golf Club gives us an opportunity to bent grass fairways, greens, and rough which we don't see in the south,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
The 14-team matches MSU against uncommon opponents that includes SEC foe Missouri with Akron, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Marshall, Miami (OH), Penn State, Seton Hall, St. John's, Toledo, Towson, UConn and host West Virginia.
“The golf course is fantastic and I know our guys are excited to get some positive momentum going as we head into our last tournaments,” Homan said.
Leading the Bulldog scorecard is the constant trio of Senior Ben Wood, Junior Ben Follett-Smith and sophomore Taylor Grant. Jackson Dick will add more upperclassmen leadership to the scorecard, while Tim Walker will be making his season debut for MSU.
Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs finished 12th at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate.
Tournament host West Virginia is led by a familiar face to Maroon and White in Sean Covich. Covich was an assistant for the Bulldog men's golf program from 2011-14 before being tabbed in May of 2014 to lead the reintroduction of WVU men's golf program.
