Hunter, Braun Move To Conso. Semis At ITAs; Agarwal Falls In Futures

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On the third day of action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, Mississippi State picked up four singles consolation victories after junior Vaughn Hunter and freshman Niclas Braun advanced to Sunday's semifinal.
“Vaughn and Niclas had a gusty performance out on the court today,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “They handled the big moments in the match and showed a lot of heart. Vaughn was down 7-9 in the 10-point breaker, but fought back to win 11-9. Niclas showed a great sense of maturity as well after serving out the match.”
Hunter's journey to the semifinal required the junior to win two three-set matches. The first coming against Southern Miss' Chao-Yu Huang, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0(3), before defeating Alabama's Matthew Rossouw, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(9).
For Braun, the freshman defeated Eduardo Lourido of Samford, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16, before downing Alabama's Hayes Brewer in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
The pair will be in action on Sunday as Hunter faces another Crimson Tide foe in Sam Edwards, while Braun takes on LSU's Gabor Csonka. Both matches will begin at 10 a.m. CT.
In doubles action, UAB's duo of Coetzee-Pinto defeated Hunter-Sanchez, 8-6.
Agarwal Falls In Semifinal Round of Houston Futures
Junior Rishab Agarawl fell to Lucas Gomez, 6-2, 7-6(3), ending his successful run at the Houston 15k Futures. Gomez was ranked 665 by the ATP before Saturday's match, owning 39 career victories in ITF Pro Circuit main draw play.
During Agarwal's run, the junior downed seven opponents in Houston.
