September 29, 2014 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Only one Bulldog was in action on Monday at the 2014 ITA All-American Championships, as the Mississippi State men's tennis squad's Julian Cash fell in a three-set thriller in the opening round of qualifying.
Cash would face off against California's No. 81 Oskar Wikberg Monday afternoon in what would turn out to be one of the more exciting matches of the collegiate major so far. The MSU freshman would jump out in front, taking the first set 6-3, but Wikberg would return the favor, taking the second frame 6-3 to level the playing field.
The final set would provide a climatic finish to the match, as it would take a tiebreaker to decide the outcome. A total of 22 points would be played in the breaker, with Wikberg taking the set and the match,3-6, 6-3, 7-6(10).
Cash will now move on to consolation play, which is set to begin tomorrow. The Brighton, England, native will be in action on the doubles court as well, teaming up with fellow Bulldog Florian Lakat in tandem play.
Lakat will also be doing double duty with singles and doubles, as he will take to solo play in main draw action. Matches in the tournament's final draw are scheduled to begin Thursday, Oct. 2. Draws will be released following the conclusion of qualifying play.
