Young Bulldogs Fall 3-0 To Kentucky In SEC Road Opener
September 26, 2014 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mississippi State's young team learned a tough lesson in its first SEC road test as Courtney Raetzman's two goals led Kentucky to a 3-0 win Friday night in Lexington.
The loss dropped MSU to 3-6 overall, 0-2 in league play, while the Wildcats improved to 6-3 and 1-1 in the SEC.
Raetzman's first-half strike proved the difference, but the Wildcats only took a 1-0 lead the locker room thanks to five saves from MSU keeper Tanya de Souza.
The Paris, France, native ended the night with a season-high eight saves.
Raetzman's goal came moments after the Bulldogs had a couple of attacking opportunity just miss the frame.
The first came in the fifth minute as senior Shannen Jainudeen played a ball behind the defense that junior Shelby Jordan ran onto before sending her shot just wide of the near post.
Three minutes later, Jainudeen out-leaped UK goalie Ayanna Parker for a header that carried just over the bar.
“We created a couple of really good chances, one that we hit wide and another Shannen just put over the crossbar,” Aaron Gordon said. “Despite giving up one early I thought we could recover in the second half, but we just weren't on today in terms of ball-winning and winning battles. Kentucky out-fought us tonight.
“Now we have to get ready to go to Knoxville and face a tough Tennessee team that lost in overtime. On double weekends if you don't get the first then you have to get the second and that's what we're going to try to do.”
Kentucky extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Arin Gilliland knocked in her fifth goal of the season over the out-stretched arms of de Souza.
Raetzman added her second goal of the night in the 76th minute as she knocked in a loose ball that deflected around in the MSU box.
The Wildcats out-shot the Dawgs 19-3. UK put 11 of its chances on frame while MSU was unable to test Parker.
The Bulldogs wrap their first SEC road trip Sunday, taking on Tennessee in a Noon CT kickoff in Knoxville. Fans can watch the match online or on the WatchESPN app via the SEC Network +.Team Stats
