GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the Mississippi State men's tennis squad, day two of the 2014 SEC Fall Coaches Classic was highlighted with a major upset, as the Bulldogs closed out play at their first tournament of the fall slate.
Tassilo Schmid, the lone MSU senior, downed Vanderbilt's 9th-ranked and the tournament's top-seeded Gonzales Austin in a three-set battle in second round action. Schmid gained a one-set advantage before Austin pulled it even. However, Schmid would not let Austin complete his comeback, as he took the third set and the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 play.
Julian Cash also advanced to the round of 16 on Saturday, as he defeated Arkansas' Jovan Parlic in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2.
MSU's Rishab Agarwal and Juan Cruz Estevarena both fell short in their bid for the third round of play. Agarwal fell 6-4, 6-0 to Florida's Diego Hidalgo, while Estevarena dropped a 7-6, 6-3.
Both Cash and Schmid both returned later in the day for round of 16 play, both falling short of the quarterfinals. Cash dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to the tournament's eight seed and No. 68 Elliot Orkin of Florida. Schmid also fell to a Florida Gator, dropping his match 6-1, 6-3 to Maxx Lipman.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the weekend with singles consolation play, as Mate Cutura and Robin Haden competed in the two-round draw. Cutura downed Ole Miss' Vinod Gowda 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 in a match that went to a super tiebreaker. The junior would finish his day with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Texas A&M's Max Lunkin. Haden would face LSU's Harrison Kennedy in his consolation match, falling in a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
State will now turn its attention to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Play is set to begin Saturday, Sept. 27.
