MSU Vying For Top 10 Finish Following Cougar Classic Second Round
September 16, 2014 | Women's Golf
The Bulldogs fired a 292 for the second round to sit in eighth place with a 581 team score. A strong final round on the Yeamans Hall course could put MSU into the Top 5, as they sit just seven shots back of Duke.
“Again today we are not yet firing on all cylinders, but it is solid to squeak out a 5-over 292 on this challenging course,” coach GingerBrown-Lemm said. “Rica Tse stepped up and was 3-under today with four birdies in a row. Our fourth and fifth players have been off both days. When that happens you hope that the top three make up for it, but it is a very tough thing to do. We are holding our own and hope tomorrow's weather cooperates so we can work our way into the Top 5.”
After opening with a 77, Tse birdied holes 15-18 to finish 3-under-par 69 that vaulted her into a tie for 31st with a 2-over 146.
After sitting in second following the opening round, sophomore Jessica Peng finished with a 1-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for ninth place at a 3-under 141.
Two-time all-American Ally McDonald also found the going tough Monday. The Fulton, Miss., native finished her second round with a 2-over 74 that dropped her into a tie for 26th place with a 1-over 145.
Ji Eun Baik carded a 76 Monday to fall into a tie for 50th at 5-over 149. Junior Logan Chaney shaved a shot off Sunday card, firing an 81 for a two-round score of 163 entering Tuesday.
Behind a 284 second round, Arkansas claimed a two-shot lead after the second round, sitting at 9-under 567 for the event. Wake Forest's Sierra Sims held on to her clubhouse lead with a 68 that put her at 11-under 133 overall.
State will tee off the final round at 7:30 a.m. CST alongside Duke, UCF and Virginia on holes 4-6.
