AUSTIN, Texas – Under the sun and in the Texas heat, the 18th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (19-11) fell to host and ninth-ranked Texas (22-5) 4-1 on Saturday in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Team Championship in Austin, Texas.
The loss closes the book on the Bulldogs' 2014 team season, as they finished with 19 wins, tying for seventh on the all-time team wins list in the MSU record book.
State jumped out 1-0 early Saturday by taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. UT grabbed the match on court one first, as the Longhorns' No. 16-ranked team of Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen defeated MSU's No. 17 duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp 8-3. State leveled the playing field on court three, as Rishab Agarwal and Zach White held off UT's David Holiner and Jacoby Lewis 8-6, leaving it all to court two to decide the day's first point.
Utilizing two consecutive breaks midway through the match, the Bulldog duo of Florian Lakat and Tassilo Schmid fought off a Longhorn rally to take an 8-6 victory against UT's Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff, giving MSU the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
However, Texas came out strong in singles, taking all six first sets in the match and would use that early momentum to close out the win. The Longhorns evened the score at 1-1 when UT's 40th-ranked Glasspool defeated No. 103 Stropp 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. UT then took the lead thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court 1 from No. 16 Hess-Olesen against State's 61st-ranked Lakat. Texas then came a point away from victory, as No. 102 Goldhoff defeated MSU's White 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 to give the Longhorns a 3-1 lead.
The clincher came on court three, where Texas' Berkowicz defeated MSU's Angus 6-4, 6-3 to seal the win and send the Longhorns to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga., next week.
At the clinch, play on courts five and six was suspended. MSU's Agarwal trailed UT's Clement Homs 6-3, 5-3 on court five, while Schmid was down a set to Texas' Holiner but up a break in the second 7-6(5), 0-2.
The Maroon and White will now focus its attention on the 2014 NCAA Individual Championships, which begin May 21 in Athens. Angus and Stropp earned their second-straight selection to the doubles field, while Lakat was named first alternate to the singles field of 64.
Mississippi State men's tennis has now made 19 appearances in the NCAA Team Championship in the last 24 years, 23 all-time.
