May 10, 2014 | Women's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – Heading into the final round at the NCAA Central Regional, the Mississippi State women's golf team holds a share of eighth for the final spot to earn a place in the NCAA Championships, while Ally McDonald moves into the top-10.
The Bulldogs improved on their 302 opening round score by eight shots to fire a 294-team score at Karsten Creek Golf Club on Friday.
“We have put ourselves in a great place for the final round,” Bulldogs head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “We have played well all year, and tomorrow's round is an opportunity to show that our process works. I look for a great round tomorrow as we still have left shots out there. Our best round is yet to come.”
Sporting an even-par 72 second round, McDonald moved up into a tie-for-10th place at 1-over-par 145 after two rounds. The Fulton, Miss., native got off to a great start with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes of the day, followed by pars to complete a spotless opening nine holes.
Freshman Jessica Peng converted five birdies in her round Friday to post an even-par 72, a six-shot-turnaround from her opening round. The All-Freshman performer began her back-nine holes with two birdies and three pars, and then birdied her final hole of the day.
Rica Tse notched consecutive birdies on holes 17 and 18 along with a birdie on the seventh hole to shoot a 2-over-par 74. The 2014 SEC All Community Service team member moves to 6-over-par 150 after 36 holes with six birdies.
Posting her second 4-over-par 76 round of the tournament was postseason newcomer Ji Eun Baik. Baik continued the Bulldogs success on the 18th hole with a birdie, as MSU is now 7-under-par with five birdies and an eagle on the hole for the regional.
Rounding out the Maroon and White lineup was Mary Langdon Gallagher, who finished one shot off Baik with a 36-hole score of 153. The veteran moves into a tie-for-third all-time at MSU with 115 career rounds played.
Top-seeded No. 3 UCLA will take the lead into the final round at 12-over-par 588. Wad Phaewchimplee of Kent State still holds her spot at the top of the individual leaderboard at 6-under-par 138.
Brown-Lemm's squad will tee off Saturday's final round at 7:30 a.m. CST on hole 1, paired with No. 10 Arizona and No. 16 Oklahoma State.
