TULSA, Okla. – Battling high-speed winds, the Mississippi State women's golf team withstood the conditions to end the opening round of the NCAA Championships two shots off the top-10, while Ally McDonald is in the top-25.
The Bulldogs put together a score of 22-over-par 302 Tuesday at Tulsa Country Club to come in at 12th on the leaderboard.
“Extremely tough conditions today with wind gusts up to 35 mph,” fourth-year MSU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “We hung in there, and put ourselves in a great position to play well and continue to move up. We are resilient, and we look forward to the three rounds left at Tulsa Country Club.”
Leading the Bulldogs with a 3-over-par 73 first round score, McDonald holds a share of 22nd with 14 pars. McDonald got off to a great start with a par-birdie-par stretch and strung together eight straight pars for her steady opening round.
NCAA Championship debutant Jessica Peng claimed the second-best round for MSU with a 5-over-par 75 scorecard. The All-Freshman selection registered a birdie on the 14th hole, followed by a string of pars to finish the day in the top-50.
Moving into second place all-time in school history for most career rounds played at 117, Mary Langdon Gallagher opened her final collegiate round with a score of 76. The team's only senior recovered from a bogey on her opening hole to lead the Bulldogs with two birdies on the day.
Rounding out the Bulldog lineup were Rica Tse and Ji Eun Baik, who completed the opening round with scores of 78 and 80 scores, respectively.
No. 7 Oklahoma heads into the second round with the lead at 8-over-par 288. There's a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard, with Doris Chen of No. 1 Southern California, Tonje Daffinrud of Denver and Lauren Kim of No. 12 Stanford all knotted at 3-under-par.
Brown-Lemm's squad will tee off the second round at 7:30 a.m. CST Wednesday on hole No. 1 alongside No. 3 Duke and No. 5 Arizona State.
