MSU Wins Schooner Classic Behind McDonald?s Record-Breaking Day
October 07, 2014 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla.- Behind record performances, Mississippi State won the Schooner Fall Classic team title Monday while senior Ally McDonald captured the individual crown.
The clubhouse leader entering Monday, McDonald fired a course- and school-record 63 en route to capturing the title with an MSU-best 197 (-13) that was also the lowest score fired at the Belmar Golf Club.
It was the fourth championship of the Fulton, Miss., native's career, tying her with Carri Wood for second in program history.
McDonald's record-setting day led the Bulldogs to the team title with a 22-under 818 that not only set the tournament record but the lowest team score in MSU history.
The Bulldogs entered the final round with an 11-stroke lead, and they didn't let up, firing an MSU-record 268 to best second place Arkansas by 18 shots.
“We have been working so hard, and these ladies dedicated themselves to excellence daily. This is an incredible 22-under-par, and to win by 18 shots in this tough field is incredible,” Brown- Lemm said. “The SEC was well represented with first, second and third place.
“Ally returned to her standard of play today as she set a course and tournament record, but there were success stories with everyone of the five on the team. Cheih Jessica Peng also played very well.”
The sophomore Peng fired a second-straight 68 Monday to finish third with a 203 (-7), her third Top 10 showing in as many tournaments. Classmate Ji Eun Baik joined her in the Top 10, carding a 3-under 67 to tie for ninth with a 2-under 208.
Senior Rica Tse also turned in a Top 20 performance, shooting a 70 for the third-straight day to finish 16th with an even-par 210.
Blaise Carabello saved her best round for last, carding a 72 to finish 78th with a 226.
“The best part of the event is the winning team selects a charity, and a $3,000 donation is made to that charity in the team's name,” Brown-Lemm said.
The Bulldogs selected the OK Kids Korral and the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Miss.
Mississippi State hopes the momentum carries over to the home course as the Bulldogs head to Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point to host the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational Oct. 20-22.
