Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational

Bulldogs Dominate The Waverly To Capture Back-To-Back Titles
October 22, 2014 | Women's Golf
After crushing the competition on Tuesday, coach Ginger Brown-Lemm's team did not let up any in Wednesday's final round. MSU fired a stellar 296 in the windy conditions of the third frame, winning by a remarkable 24 shots against the second-place finishers, South Florida.
The tourney win gives the Bulldogs its first back-to-back wins since the 1999-2000 season, when MSU captured three-straight titles to start off the year.
Mississippi State sealed its victory Wednesday with a 6-under par 296, keeping the Bulldogs as the only squad in the field to finish under par.
“We had a very solid tournament here at our home course,” Brown-Lemm said. “We played a great round the second day, but conditions changed today and collectively we did not handle it well. However, that is why we have three rounds. We will learn from this week and have a great off season training, and continue our quest for a SEC title and a national championship.”
Third-round power came from the individual tournament champion, senior Ally McDonald, who adds the OWBI title to her long list of personal accolades. The All-American completed the challenging round 1-under 71 for a total of 207 (-9). The win on Wednesday earned McDonald her second-consecutive tournament win after a record breaking performance in the Schooner Fall Classic last week.
Coming out hot on the first day of the tournament was rising star Jessica Peng. After shooting a 68 on day one, Peng was able to finish the day at No. 4 with a total of 1-over 217.
Tying each other overall for 11th with a 4-over par was sophomore Ji Eun Baik and junior Logan Chaney. After a dominate performance in the second round, finishing 3-under, Baik was able to complete the tournament at 220, 2-over par for the third round. Chaney capped a great tournament showing with a 1-over 73 in the third round, leaving the tournament at 4-over 220.
MSU's other senior, Rica Tse, battled the elements Wednesday, finishing in the top 20 with a 79. Completeing her last home tournament at 223, and 16th place.
Two out of the three MSU individuals finished in the top 35 of the tournament. Blaise Carabello led the pack, shooting a 76 in the third round, tied for 25 overall. Sophomore Izel Pieters shaved off three shots from her second round, ending the day 3-over par and in 33rd place overall.
Haley Austin, making her Maroon and White debut this week, tallied a 19-over par 235 after earning an 11-over par 83 on Wednesday.
Mississippi State takes a break from action for the winter, but will resume the 2014-15 campaign in the spring, travelling to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Florida State Seminole Classic on Feb.13-15.
