Jainudeen Nets Seventh Goal Of Season In Setback To No. 5 Florida
October 10, 2014 | Soccer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shannen Jainudeen's seventh goal of the season wasn't enough as the Mississippi State soccer team fell 5-1 to No. 5 Florida Friday night in Gainesville.
Jainudeen's second goal in as many matches gave Aaron Gordon's squad the early advantage as she netted a Hannah Smith corner kick 1:17 after the opening whistle.
Smith put a perfectly placed corner right at the foot of Jainudeen in front of goal, and the senior put a volley past UF keeper Taylor Burke.
Florida leveled the match in the 10th minute on a Savannah Jordan strike. Jordan hit an initial shot in the box that deflected off MSU defender Darbi Filliben right back to Jordan for the equalizer.
Rhylee DeCrane, who had four saves on the night, kept the match level with a stellar save on a Meggie Dougherty Howard shot in the 14th minute.
MSU (3-10, 0-6 SEC) countered in the 25th minute as Mallory Eubanks put a ball through to Payton Gruenewald for a shot that was stopped by Burke.
Eubanks got the ball into the final third again in the 31st minute. She connected a pass to the middle to Shelby Jordan, but the senior was unable to get a solid foot on the shot and Burke made one of her two saves.
The teams took the 1-1 tie to halftime, with the Bulldogs holding a 3-2 edge in on-goal opportunities.
“We knew our young team was going to have a tough task on the road against a veteran Florida team that was ranked No. 5 in the country, but we competed well and defended well and went to halftime tied,” Gordon said. “Shannen finished a great corner by Hannah Smith, and we created some chances on the break which is what we wanted to do.
“Unfortunately Shannen went down just before halftime, and that hurt our ability to shut down their dangerous attack. Our effort was good in the second half, but we couldn't maintain ball possession enough to create any attacks. Florida's ball possession really wore us down late, but a lot of freshmen earned valuable minutes against one of the best teams in the country which will really help us as we grow our program.”
State was held to one shot in the second half as Florida (11-2, 6-0 SEC) pulled in front for good.
Jordan put the Gators ahead 2-1 in the 65th minute on a Tessa Andujar pass. Andujar made it a 3-1 game with a goal in the 71st minute, and three minutes later she connected to Brooke Sharp for a finish that gave the Gators a three-goal cushion.
Betsy Middleton made it a 5-1 advantage in the 84th minute as she chipped a shot just over the out-stretched reach of DeCrane.
Florida out-shot the Bulldogs 23-5, including a 9-3 edge in on-goal chances.
Mississippi State enjoys an open date Sunday and returns home next weekend, hosting Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 and No. 10 Texas A&M in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 19. Both contests will be broadcast online on SEC Network +.Team Stats
