Bulldog Soccer Falls To LSU On Late Goal

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State had some unfortunate bounces go against it Friday night as LSU scored a late goal to escape the MSU Soccer Field with a 1-0 win.
The Bulldogs fall to 7-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the SEC, while LSU picked up its first league win of the season to run its overall record to 5-4-3.
The winning goal came from Victoria Sample in the 81st minute. Jade Kovacevic's initial cross attempt was knocked up in the air, and she reclaimed possession and knocked the ball to Sample for a shot into the top shelf past an out-stretched CJ Winship.
Winship put in a stellar showing in her first start in goal, making five saves on the night.
Mississippi State matched the Tigers with six on-goal chances, but the Dawgs were unable to get the final ball past LSU keeper Megan Kinneman.
"I'm absolutely gutted. I thought we played a really good game," head coach Neil Macdonald said. "The back four and midfield three were excellent. We created some good chances, but were a little unfortunate in the first half, hitting the post and the bar. Overall, though, I was pleased with the way our team came out and fought for 90 minutes."
Senior Madison McKee and junior Elisabeth Sullivan each fired three shots to lead the Bulldogs.
After a McKee attempt from range in the 15th minute was saved, sophomore Shannen Jainudeen nearly put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a header off a corner kick that was punched away by the LSU goalie.
Eleven minutes later it was Winship's turn as she directed a Colby Maffei attempt at the top corner over the crossbar.
Moments later the Bulldogs had a couple of chances on goal come short. Freshman Honeye Heydari had a shot in front of the goal hit the left post. Dana Forbes follow-up attempt deflected off the crossbar to Sullivan for a shot that was saved by Kinneman.
Kovacevic had a chance to break the stalemate right before half, but Winship made the save on her header attempt.
Each team unsuccessfully tested the keeper early in the second half, and both teams traded possession until Sample broke the deadlock with her first goal of the season.
Mississippi State had a chance to equalize two minutes later off a free kick right outside the LSU 18-yard box, but senior Jasmine Simmons' shot was blocked by an LSU defender.
State's last opportunity to level the match came with just over two minutes left as Sullivan fired a ball that was saved by Kinneman.
Mississippi State wraps the four-match homestand Sunday, hosting sixth-ranked Texas A&M in a 3 p.m. contest that will be televised by Cox Sports Television.
