Rosson Sets School Record In 0-0 Draw At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Facing a road and league opener in the same match is daunting for a young team, but the Mississippi State soccer team rose to the challenge and came away with a 0-0 draw as Skylar Rosson set the school's career shutouts record against South Carolina Friday night in Columbia.
Despite the draw, the Bulldogs earned a point in the SEC table and kept their undefeated streak intact as they improved to 7-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the league. South Carolina ran its record to 3-2-2, 0-0-1 SEC.
State also extended its school-record shutouts streak to six, and MSU senior goalie Skylar Rosson set a new school record with her 12th-career blank sheet as she saved a season-high eight shots.
"To come to Columbia for our first road match and come away with a point is a great achievement for our team," Neil Macdonald said. "I thought we were outstanding for the full 110 minutes. We created some great opportunities and had chance to clinch it. I'm really proud of the way our girls battled and fought a very good South Carolina team. Hopefully this is just another building block for us."
Rosson and the Bulldog defense came up big in the second overtime to prevent a couple of early South Carolina chances at the golden goal.
The first was a long shot toward the back post by Andie Romness that Rosson saved. The second came on a free kick from 30 yards out. The Christa Neary kick was saved by Rosson, but she lost possession of the ball and Angotti-Smith's follow-up went wide.
Mississippi State had a chance to win it on a free kick with a minute left. Freshman Honeye Heydari struck the ball from 25 yards out, but Vercillo made the save as she tipped it over the crossbar.
The Dawgs quickly sent the corner kick into the box, and it was batted down to Morganne Grimes for a header that was stopped off the line by a USC defender.
South Carolina claimed five shots in the final overtime to take a 19-13 edge in the match. After the two squads combined for eight shots in the first half, the two teams fired 15 times in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
The Dawgs nearly broke the deadlock with seconds left before the halftime whistle. Freshman Mary Kathryn Taylor out-worked her defender down the right side and hit a shot toward the top shelf that D'Angelo was able to tip over the crossbar to send the match to half tied 0-0.
South Carolina made the first challenge of the second half in the 50th minute. Danielle Au fired a ball toward the far post from distance, but Rosson made a diving save to send the ball wide.
Moments later the Gamecocks sent a free kick into the box that was headed toward goal by Elizabeth Sinclair, but Rosson once again made the stop.
Sullivan earned the Bulldogs' first shot of the second half in the 57th minute as she sent a bending shot toward the far post only to see it carry just wide of goal.
South Carolina had a chance to break the deadlock in the 78th minute on a long throw-in that Courtney Agnotti-Smith headed toward the goal. Rosson made the save but the ball ended up on the turf and Shannen Jainudeen cleared it out of danger.
With just over two minutes left, Danielle Au fired a shot on the ground toward the left post that Rosson dove and deflected around the post to send the match to overtime
State maintained possession in the opening extra session, taking both of the period's shots. The first threat at the golden goal came two minutes in. Sullivan made a run down the middle and flicked left to Heydari, who took a shot that was saved by Vercillo.
Heydari created another attempt a minute later, but the shot carried just past the far post.
