April 01, 2012 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas - Competition was high on the last day of the 85th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and at the end of the day not only was Mississippi State in the top of the pack with nine Top 15 finishes, they had one athlete who was tops in the nation.
"Our athletes proved themselves today," coach Steve Dudley said. "They performed at the top of their game and at the end of the day they were rewarded for it. If we can keep this momentum going, then I am anxious to see where the rest of the season goes."
For three straight meets Jarrett Samuels has been at the top of the leader board in the long jump, and today in Austin he continued the streak. The freshman, who was the nation's No. 1 long jumper in high school, can now add collegiate No. 1 to his resume, as he jumped 26-02.50 to claim victory, break the MSU freshman record and move to No. 2 on the MSU all-time list.
