March 29, 2012 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas - They say everything is bigger in Texas, and the track and field meets are no exception' as competition at the 85th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays includes some of the biggest names in the sport. Mississippi State lined up with those athletes starting Thursday and at the end of day they can hold their heads high as they have already secured a couple of Top 10 finishes.
Erica Bougard was first off the blocks for the Lady Bulldogs, as she competed in the heptathlon. Bougard began her day with the 100-meter hurdles (14.01), where she finished fourth. The freshman then went on to compete in the shot put (30-09.75), high jump (5-05.25), before finishing third in the 200-meter dash (24.50). Bougard then captured with a third place finish in the long jump (19-04.75), and followed that with a 10th place spot in the javelin (101-00) and a second place position in the 800-meter run (2:16.78). For her efforts Bougard collected 5382 points to finish fifth in the event, and move to third on MSU's all-time outdoor list.
Joining Bougard in the first rounds of competition was Favian Cowards, who entered the meet after setting a new MSU hammer throw record earlier in the season at the Louisiana Classics. Cowards was not able to top her earlier performance, but still managed to find a spot among the top competitors as she finished tenth with a length of 185-09.
Nathan Arnett was the lone Bulldog to see action on Thursday, as he laced up for the 400-meter hurdle preliminaries. Arnett, who ran 52.40, was just shy of qualifying for Saturday's finals as the junior finished 12th for the day.
Texas Relays' action will resume at 9:30 Friday morning with the 4x100-meter relay, which will feature the Lady Bulldogs in heat two.
