Mississippi State Has Success On Day One in New York

NEW YORK, NY - Big times and big successes were the story of the day as Mississippi State track and field competed in the "Big Apple"
Competing against some of the top athletes in the nation, MSU posted three victories and seven additional Top 10 finishes to close day one of the New Balance Invitational.
"All in all we competed with toughness today," coach Steve Dudley said. "Competing here really gives us a good idea of where we stand, and from the looks of it we are in pretty good shape heading forward."
Leading the charge for the Lady Bulldogs was Erica Bougard (19-07 ½), who picked up her second career victory as she took top honors and posted a personal best in the long jump, finishing just ahead of teammate Keisha Wallace (19-00 ¾) who was second. Racquel Farquharson joined Wallace in the second place category with her time of 8.62 in the 60-meter hurdles. A pair of 400-meter dashers closed out the Lady Bulldog Top 10s as Ocian Archer (56.69) placed eighth in the college division, while Jody-Ann Muir (54.81) was 10th in the championship division and earned a spot in the finals on Saturday.
A pair of Bulldogs claimed victory as Randy Patterson (1:03.94) was first in the 500-meter dash college division while D'Angelo Cherry (6.63) crossed the line first in the 60-meter dash. Daundre Barnaby was the next Bulldog earning a spot in the Top 10 as he ran 47.35 to finish third in the 400-meter dash and earn a spot in Saturday's finals. Also, running in the 500-meter dash was Emanuel Mayers (1:03.26) who claimed sixth place in the championship division. Rounding out the Bulldog Top 10 was Jarrett Samuels who jumped 23-08 ¼ to finish 10th in the long jump.
"As the day closed I was very impressed with how well we competed," added Dudley. "We held our own against some of the best in the nation on day one, so I am looking forward to seeing how we fair on day two."
Day two action at The Armory Track and Field Center will begin Saturday at 8:30 am with the women's 4x800-meter relay.
