4x400m Relay Team Sprints To Title At NCAA East Preliminaries
May 28, 2011 | Track & Field
James Harris had already qualified for three events when he raced the first leg for the winning men's 4x400m relay. The foursome of Harris, O'Neal Wilder, Daundre Barnaby and Tavaris Tate ran their best time all year to advance to competition in June. Their time of 3:03.23 also placed the Maroon and White quartet at third on the MSU All-Time list.
The men's 4x100m relay squad also secured a spot in Iowa. The quartet of Justin Christian, Garren Hendricks, Wilder and Harris ran 39.87 to finish fifth.
Hendricks then competed in the 200m dash semifinal. The sophomore ran 21.34 to finish 13th, missing the National Championships by 0.04 seconds.
It was a big day for the Lady Bulldog relays, as Taneisha Baker, Brittany Covington, Jody-Ann Muir and Racquel Farquharson ran 3:36.81 to finish 12th and punch their ticket to Nationals.
"Today was just a repeat of the previous two days in that we just kept qualifying for nationals," head coach Steve Dudley said. "I think our kids are just hungry for success and I cannot ask anymore of them. They give it their all and in the end I think we could just take the bus to Iowa instead of Starkville, since just about everyone on here qualified for the NCAAs."
In the end, MSU qualified 14 athletes in nine events for the NCAA Championships. Competition at Drake University is set to begin June 8 and will run through June 11.
