MSU Finds More Success On Day 2 Of NCAA East Preliminaries
May 27, 2011 | Track & Field
Jessica Merriweather started things off for the Maroon and White in the high jump, as the senior jumped 5-10 into place 11th to earn a trip to Des Moines, Iowa, for the NCAA nationals.
Jody-Ann Muir and Richesa McCaleb then secured their own spots. Muir ran 53.17 to finish fifth in the 400-meter dash, while McCaleb finished 12th in the 100m dash (11.57).
Advancing to the 100m hurdle quarterfinals is Lady Bulldog Racquel Farquharson. The sophomore ran 13.86 to finish 24th and qualify for Saturday's competition.
The Bulldogs know they will have two athletes representing them in the 400m dash in Iowa. Tavaris Tate ran 46.19 to advance and finish just ahead of teammate and fellow qualifier James Harris (46.40).
Garren Hendricks will have to wait until Saturday's competition ends to know his fate, as the sophomore ran 21.29 to finish 19th and advance to the 200m dash quarterfinals.
"Overall we had a great day," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "You come to this meet and everyone tells you what you are supposed to do and how you are supposed to finish. We don't listen to that. We do what we have to do to get it done and qualify. We qualified five more for nationals, and we still have one more day to go."
The Maroon and White will begin the final day of competition at 5:00 p.m. with Ed Wesela in the discus, followed by the women's 4x100m relays at 6.
