Three Bulldogs Advanced To Nationals On Thursday
May 26, 2011 | Track & Field
James Harris and Marcus Jackson gave it their all as they lined up for the high jump, and when all jumps were complete the freshmen found themselves on top of the heap. Both Harris and Jackson jumped 7-01 ½ to win and advance punch their tickets to Des Moines, Iowa and the National Championships.
Harris may have punched his ticket to the NCAAs in the high jump, but he still has to race one more day to see if he qualifies in the 400m dash. The Lanett, Ala., native ran a 46.83 to advance to the quarterfinals. Joining Harris in the 400m dash quarterfinals is Tavaris Tate, who ran a 46.93 to advance.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals is Garren Hendricks. The sophomore ran 10.54 in the 100m dash to advance to Friday's competition.
In the final women's event of the day, Haley Greenwell punched her ticket to Des Moines after setting a school record in the 10,000-meter run at 33:52.57 to finish 11th .
The Lady Bulldogs advanced three athletes to Friday's quarterfinals. Jody-Ann Muir ran a personal best 52.64 to advance in the 400m dash. Taneisha Baker will join Muir in the 400m dash quarterfinals after running 54.74, while Richesa McCaleb ran 11.74 to advance in the 100m dash.
"We had a really good day today," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "We obviously punched some tickets to the finals today, but we cannot stop there. This is sudden death. You can give it your all and make it to the finals or you can take it easy and go home and drink coca-colas for the rest of the summer. Our goal is to continue to give it our all and get out there tomorrow and qualify some more for nationals."
Action will resume in Bloomington on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and will conclude at 9:10 pm with the men's 3,000m steeplechase.
