MSU Goes The Distance On Day 3 Of SEC Championships
February 27, 2011 | Track & Field
"Our girls are just progressively getting better and that is what it is going to take to climb the ladder to success," said head coach Steve Dudley. "They went out there and gave it their all. They left it all on the track and you cannot ask for any more."
Haley Greenwell was the top individual finisher for the Lady Bulldogs. The sophomore posted a time of 17:05.88 in the 5000m run, earning her a seventh-place finish. Greenwell's time also was a personal record and was fast enough to earn her a third-place spot on the MSU all-time indoor record book.
Also earning a seventh-place finish was the MSU distance medley quartet of sophomore Chloe Phillips, junior Candice Polk, sophomore Skylar Wallen, and freshman Katie Hutson, who posted a time of 11:51.04. Rounding out the trio of Maroon and White Top 10 finishes was the 1600m relay team of senior Taneisha Baker, sophomore Brittany Covington, sophomore Jody-Ann Muir, and senior Richesa McCaleb, with their eighth-place finishing time of 3:42.44; a time worthy of second place on the MSU all-time indoor list.
In other competition, a pair of Bulldog sprinters ended their day at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Albuquerque, N.M., with a pair of second-place finishes. Sophomore Tavaris Tate earned his second place in the 400m dash (46.53), while junior D'Angelo Cherry posted his in the 60m dash (6.54).
"It was a huge weekend in Albuquerque," Dudley said. "For these guys to still be in college and competing with professionals is impressive. D'Angelo especially impressed me. He is the perfect example of someone who never quit believing in himself. He had a rough year last year with injury, but he never gave up on himself and it paid off and he is back."
After returning from Fayetteville, Ark., Mississippi State will lace up on March 3rd and 4th for the Last Chance Meet.
