Bulldogs Advance In Singles, Doubles Consolation At All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. - In the second day of play at the ITA All-American Championships Friday, Mississippi State saw two players advance to the quarterfinals of singles and one team move into the semifinals of doubles action, posting some solid wins over ranked foes along the way.
In the round of 16 of consolation singles, MSU's 46th-ranked Malte Stropp faced 60th-ranked Nelson Vick of Ohio State where they two battled to three sets. However, Stropp took control in the third as he held his Buckeye opponent to just one game, taking the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. State's 27th-ranked George Coupland earned a walkover victory over Mousheg Havhanissyan of Pepperdine, ranked 111th in the ITA preseason polls.
Louis Cant, ranked 36th nationally, faced a highly-ranked Kentucky foe in #3 Eric Quigley. Taking the first set 6-3, Cant battled hard but Quigley proved too much as he took the match in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Beginning at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, Coupland will take on 62nd-ranked Andre Dome of Cal Poly while Stropp goes head-to-head with Pepperdine's Finn Tearney, ranked #19 in the ITA poll.
In doubles consolation action Friday, the seventh-ranked MSU pair of Cant and Stropp advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down a tough tandem in Duke's 15th-ranked Henrique Cunha and Chris Mengel 8-5. Next facing Georgia's Nathan Hasha and Hernus Pieters, MSU's Cant and Stropp prevailed again as they handled their UGA opponent 8-4 to advance to the semifinals Saturday afternoon. They will take on Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen of Ohio State tomorrow following consolation singles matches.
