October 06, 2011 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla - After battling through three rounds of qualifiers the past three days, Mississippi State's 73rd-ranked junior James Chaudry has earned a spot in the main draw of singles action at the ITA All-American Championships with his victory on Wednesday. The event is the first major of the collegiate tennis season.
Chaudry's third round matchup came against a tough opponent in Tulane's 50th-ranked and top-seeded Idan Mark. However, Chaudry downed the Green Wave opponent with relative ease as he rolled to victory in 6-0, 6-3 fashion. With the win, Chaudry will face 45th-ranked Nick Andrews of the University of California in the opening round of the main draw Thursday at 11 a.m. CT.
Chaudry will join three other Bulldogs who were automatic entries into the main draw - 27th-ranked George Coupland, 36th-ranked Louis Cant, and Malte Stropp, ranked 46th in the ITA preseason polls. Mississippi State will be one of only two teams in the nation to have four players in the main draw of singles action, joining Ohio State (5).
At 10 a.m. CT Thursday, Coupland will face Georgia's sixth-ranked Will Spencer, the #5 seed, while Cant takes on #91 Georgy Batrakov of BYU (who advanced to the main draw from the qualifiers) at 8 a.m. CT. Stropp, the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, is set to face seventh-ranked Dennis Nevolo of Illinois at 9:30 a.m. CT, who is competing as the #6 seed. Two rounds of singles will be played Thursday.
Competing in the main draw of doubles play Thursday for MSU will be the seventh-ranked and seventh-seeded tandem of Cant and Stropp who will square off against New Mexico's duo of Phil Anderson and Jadon Phillips at 6 p.m. CT.
In other qualifying action Wednesday, the MSU tandem of Coupland and sophomore Zach White fell to Jesus Bandres and Sander Gille of East Tennessee State 8-5, just missing the main draw of doubles.
