
State Tennis Completes Day Two Action At SEC Indoor Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - On the second day of action at the SEC Indoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., the Mississippi State men's tennis team tallied four victories in singles and doubles.
First Bulldog senior Artem Ilyushin won by default against 52nd nationally ranked Bob van Overbeek of Florida to advance to the round of 16 of the main draw in singles. In the round of 16, Ilyushin fell in a two-set battle to the No. 47 Sadio Doumbia of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2. Ilyushin will participate in singles consolation play tomorrow against LSU's Julien Gauthier.
Also active in the main draw of singles was true freshman Zach White. White dropped his second round match to Tennessee's J.P. Smith who stands 21st nationally, 6-2, 6-3. White followed up the main draw match with another match against a host-school Tennessee player, 38th nationally ranked Matteo Fago in singles consolation. After winning the opening set, White eventually fell in a close three-set battle, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(4). Ilyushin and senior Tanner Stump were teamed up in the main draw of doubles. After advancing with an impressive victory on the opening day of play at the SEC Indoor Championships, Ilyushin and Stump faced off against the 11th ranked tandem in the country, Alex Lacroix and Nassim Slilam of Florida, but the nationally ranked Gator duo got best of the Bulldog tandem in a tight 8-6 match.
In the opening round of consolation play at the annual conference event four other Bulldogs were active. Newcomer James Chaudry won his first career match as a Bulldog in the first round of consolation play in singles in a matching-set battle, 6-2, 6-2, over Maks Gold of Kentucky to advance in consolation play. Chaudry will faceoff against Alabama's Daniil Proskura tomorrow in the round of 16 in singles consolation. Bulldog senior Max Gregor won by default over Ryuji Hirooka of Kentucky to also advance further in consolation play. Gregor's round of 16 singles consolation opponent tomorrow will be host-school Tennessee's Boris Conkic.
A pair of seniors ended singles play at the indoor tournament today, with Stump of State falling, 6-4, 6-0, to Sebastian Carlsson of LSU and Antonio Lastre slipped up to Tennessee's Ed Jones on his home courts, 7-6(4), 6-1.
In consolation doubles action MSU's Chaudry and White won by default over Kentucky's Alberto Gonzalez and Gold. Chaudry and White will face LSU's Gautheir and Stefan Szacinski in the semifinals of doubles consolation. State's Gregor and Lastre dropped an 8-4 decision to LSU's 27th ranked tandem Carlsson and Neal Skupski.
