June 01, 2010 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The accolades keep rolling in for Mississippi State senior catcher Chelsea Bramlett. On Tuesday, the Cordova, Tenn., native was named a finalist for the Honda Sports Award for Softball, presented annually to the nation's top player.
Bramlett was named to the list along with Washington's Danielle Lawrie, UCLA's Megan Langenfeld and Jen Yee of Georgia Tech. The winner will become a candidate for the Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. In addition to this honor, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The winner's program will receive $5,000.
"We are excited and very proud of Chelsea and her accomplishments. This is a fitting tribute to her career and the season she had this year," Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller said. "The Honda Award is the Heisman Trophy for softball, and for her to be a finalist for that award is such a great honor following the career she's had here at Mississippi State."
This latest honor comes after she received NFCA First Team All-Region and All-SEC honors for the fourth time in her career. The three-time first team All-American was also tabbed a Top 10 finalist for both the USA Softball Player of the Year and Lowe's Senior CLASS Awards.
The United States National Team member enjoyed an outstanding senior campaign, setting SEC records for single-season (.536) and career (.461) batting average. She ranks second in the nation in batting average while topping the country with a school-record 61 bases that are the third-most in SEC annals.
Bramlett, who swiped a school-record 63-straight bases going back to 2009, finished her career with 207 stolen bases, the second-most in both SEC and NCAA history.
This season, Bramlett set MSU's career hits record (359) and runs record (219) while finishing two back of the single-season hits mark with 98.
Bramlett also capped a stellar academic career by claiming ESPN The Magazine All-American of the Year honors. Her selection as the top scholar-athlete in NCAA Division I gave her first team Academic All-America honors for the third-straight season.
