STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's Ryan Duffy homered three times Tuesday night as the Baseball Bulldogs defeated Jackson State 18-2 in a college baseball game played at Dudy Noble Field.
Duffy kicked off M-State's nine-game homestand in grand fashion by becoming the seventh player in Bulldog history to homer three times in a game. Duffy finished with a career-high five hits, career-high nine RBIs and also set a new school standard with 15 total bases.
"I just had a night where I saw the ball real well," said Duffy, a senior right fielder. "The first at-bat really gave me a lot of confidence. It carried over into a big night.
Duffy ht a two-run double to the right center gap in the first inning. An inning later, Duffy hit a three-run home run just right of the extended wall in dead center. After single in the fourth inning, Duffy this time cleared the extended wall in dead center with a monster three-run shot in the sixth inning. The big night closed with his fifth home run of the season - a three-run shot over the right field wall.
"No question Duffy needed a night like this," MSU head coach John Cohen said. "It could catapult him as a senior. Overall, we needed a game like this for several reasons. It seems like everybody in the (Southeastern Conference) has had multiple ones."
The Bulldogs (16-13) set new season highs with 18 runs scored and 17 hits in winning a 23rd straight from the in-state rival Tigers (14-11). Overall, it was MSU's 50th win in the series.
MSU blew past an early 1-0 deficit with three runs in the first inning and six more scores in the second inning. Before the night ended, the Bulldogs plated at least one run in seven of their eight at-bats.
In the first inning, MSU scored three unearned runs with a pair of them coming home on Duffy's double. An inning later, an infield error and walk again opened the door. Luke Adkins followed with a double and later scored on a two-run double by Connor Powers. Cody Freeman also had an RBI-double before Duffy's two-run shot.
In the third inning, MSU stretched the lead when Jaron Shepherd tripled and scored on a sacrifice-fly by Nick Vickerson. The lead grew to 12-1 on a two-run double by Powers in the fifth inning. From there, Duffy drove in five of the final six runs for the victors.
"We were able to get some guys into the lineup tonight," Cohen said. "We were able to let guys get some work in that were struggling offensively. We just got a lot worked on tonight."
Greg Houston (4-0) threw three shutout innings, in relief of starter C.C. Watson, to earn the win. Kendall Graveman threw a pair of innings in relief, while Matt Lane, Caleb Reed and Devin Jones each worked an inning apiece.
Powers, Freeman and Shepherd each followed Duffy in the multiple hit column. Powers finished with four RBIs - his third game with four or more RBIs this season. Powers is now ninth all-time in MSU history with 181 career RBIs. Also for Powers, it was his 12th multi-hit game. For Freeman, it was his eighth multi-hit game and for Shepherd, it was his third.
Jackson State finished with five hits. Chad Hall had a single and double for the Tigers. Starting pitcher Quintavious Drains (4-2) worked two innings and took the loss.
The Bulldogs' nine-game homestand resumes when SEC rival Arkansas comes to town. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
