MSU Track And Field Has Record-Setting Day In Texas; Ends Competition In Auburn
April 03, 2010 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas - Mississippi State track and field teams spent their last day in Austin at the 83rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays rearranging MSU's all-time performance list Saturday.
"We had a good day today," head coach Al Schmidt said. "In fact, we competed well the entire weekend."
MSU's biggest performance of the day came when the men's 4x200-meter relay team broke a 25-year-old school record. O'Neal Wilder, Dwight Mullings, Kendall May and Tavaris Tate ran 1 minute, 21.09 seconds to place second in the invitational race.
"The men's 4x200 time is big," Schmidt said. "Not many teams have a time this good, and we'll get our shot to knock of (Texas) A&M at Penn Relays. We are still a work in progress, so we are looking forward to that chance."
Hurdler Keisha Wallace ran a fourth-place 13.51 seconds in the invitational 100-meter hurdles en route to setting a MSU freshman record.
Lady Bulldog 4x200-meter relay team, Richesa McCaleb, Jody-Ann Muir, LaQuinta Aaron and Wendy Copeland, ran 1:36.51 to finish sixth and move to fourth on MSU's all-time performance list.
"Our women did great," Schmidt added. "They got some Top 5 performances and that's always good."
The women's 4x400-meter relay team also saw success Saturday running 3:40.54 to move to the No. 2 spot on the MSU all-time performance list. The men's 4x400-meter relay competed in the invitational section and ran 3:04.00 to finish second.
MSU competed in a number of individual events on their last day in Texas, and junior 400-meter hurdler Emanuel Mayers had his best performance of the season. Mayers ran 50.26 seconds to finish third, while May finished fifth (10.35 seconds) in the 100-meter dash final and Chloe Phillips finished ninth (4:41.02) in the 1500-meter run.
MSU CONCLUDES COMPETITION IN AUBURN
State also has a small group of Bulldogs complete competition at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. Saturday.
Ed Weslea threw 54 feet, 03.25 inches to finish seventh in the shot put to lead MSU's performances for the day.
Josh Tucker turned in Top 10 performances in both the pole vault and high jump. He finished sixth (14-01.25) in the pole vault and ninth (6-07.50) in the high jump.
The entire MSU track and field teams return to action April 10 at the Ole Miss Invitation in Oxford.
