MSU Track Has Big Day In Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - Mississippi State track and field teams stepped up big in front of a national crowd on the third day of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Friday and qualified for the final rounds in the men's 100-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay and the women's 4x400-meter relay.
"I thought it was a good day for the Bulldogs," head coach Al Schmidt said. "We had made finals in the men's 4x1 and women's 4x4."
Four Bulldogs ran the 100-meter dash, with junior Kendall May and D'Angelo Cherry sprinting their way to Saturday's final. May ran the event's third fastest time 10.34 seconds, while Cherry ran 10.50 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Justin Christian, May, Dwight Mullings and Cherry turned in the fourth fastest time headed into the finals at 40.40 seconds.
The Lady Bulldog foursome of Crystal Wilson, LaQuinta Aaron, Jody-Ann Muir and Taneisha Baker, posted the ninth-fastest qualifying time at 3:42.42 en route to punching their ticket to Saturday's final.
State also saw success in the field events, having turned in third and fifth place finishes in the high and long jumps.
"Both girls jumped very well today," Schmidt said. "There jumps should definatley get them into the first round of NCAAs."
Junior Jessica Merriweather jumped 5 feet, 9.25 inches to place third. Her jump moved her to the No. 2 spot on MSU's all-time performance list. In the long jump Wendy Copeland placed fifth with a season best 20-07 leap.
MSU concludes what has already been a successful week in Texas Saturday.
MSU also opened competition at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. Friday. Freshman Allison Storey threw a personal-best 135-01 in the javelin throw to move to second on the MSU all-time performance list.
State has five Bulldogs competing in Auburn on Saturday in field events and hurdles.
