March 30, 2010 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. - The Mississippi State men's golf team dropped a head-to-head match to the Memphis Tigers, played at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. The Bulldogs posted rounds of 303 and 304 and finished nine strokes shy of the victorious Tigers.
The Tigers won the two-round competition by posting back-to-back rounds of 299 for a 22-over-par finish.
"We beat ourselves today, plain and simple," said head coach Clay Homan. "We had a perfect day for scoring and we failed to chip and putt as well as we needed to. We will continue to work on that."
For the first time in his career sophomore Brad Thompson was the Bulldogs leader with a 5-over-pare effort, including a three-under par front nine performance in the second round of play. State sophomore Lee Heaton and true freshman Robi Calvesbert both notched 36-hole scores of 153 and true freshman Brad Mason rounded out the team score by posting a 155 through the two rounds of play.
Sophomore Brooks Bankhead and true freshman Mike Genovse were also active in MState's lineup and tallied scores of 160 and 161. MSU junior Evan Hugall and redshirt freshman John Darden competed as individuals. Hugall posted consistent rounds of 77 and Darden fired a 79 in the first round and improved two strokes in round two with a 77.
Memphis was led by sophomore Jonathan Fly, who finished the match at even par, which included a 5-under-par showing in the opening round. Senior Brandon Bunn and redshirt freshman Carlson Cox of the Tigers tallied two-round scores of 151 and sophomore Jack Belote rounded out UM's lineup with a 152, which included a 1-under-par effort in round two.
The Bulldogs will return to the links on April 5, competing in the Reunion Intercollegiate played at the Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison, Miss.
