STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State senior Chelsea Bramlett went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Bulldogs were unable to overcome two Dorian Shaw home runs as No. 7 Michigan claimed a 3-0 win Wednesday evening at the MSU Softball Field.
The loss dropped MSU to 9-6 on the year, while the Wolverines improved to 10-4 overall.
Bramlett extended her hit streak 12 games with Wednesday's two-hit effort. She also has now collected multiple hits in six of State's last seven games. Sophomore Ka'ili Smith and senior Jessie Bailey had the Dawgs' other two hits in the contest. Smith's base hit pushed her hit streak to six games.
Bramlett opened the Dawgs' first at-bat with an infield base hit, and she advanced to second as the throw to first sailed wide. An Allie Heon sacrifice bunt moved Bramlett to third, but Michigan starter Nikki Nemitz got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
Shaw staked the Wolverines to a 1-0 lead the next half inning as she lined a Kylie Vry offering over the wall in left-center.
Vry fell to 2-2 on the season as she allowed a run on three hits over four innings. Misty Flesher tossed the final three frames, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three.
“We threw a couple of bad pitches that they hit out, but I thought Kylie and Misty did well,” Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller said. “We have to put some runs on the board. Michigan is a top-10 team for a reason. You have to take advantage of opportunities, and we didn't do that in the first inning. You can't let those chances slip away against great teams. Hopefully we can regroup this weekend and get back on track before conference play starts.”
Nemitz ran her record to 3-3 as she scattered four hits and struck-out four through five innings. Jordan Taylor tossed a perfect final two frames to earn her first save of the year.
A Shaw two-out home run in the sixth extended the U-M lead to 2-0, and Bree Evans put the final run on the board in the seventh as she lined a two-out single to left that scored pinch-runner Kristin Larsen.
Mississippi State wraps up the pre-SEC slate this weekend, hosting Mississippi Valley State, Troy and Wright State in the Bulldog Classic. Miller's squad opens play against Troy at 3 p.m. Friday. The Dawgs face MVSU and Wright State at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, on Saturday before closing the weekend with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Admission to all games at the MSU Softball Field is free.
