STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State freshman Kylie Vry tossed a one-hit shutout, and sophomore Ka'ili Smith drove in three runs on a 3-for-3 afternoon as the Bulldog softball team blanked Troy 8-0 on Friday in the opening game of the Bulldog Classic at the MSU Softball Field.
Vry came just two outs shy of her second no-hitter of the season. The Des Moines, Iowa, native improved to 3-2 on the season as she struck out one in going the distance.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 10-6 on the season, while Troy fell to 12-5.
Smith's three-hit afternoon extended her hit streak to seven games, one shy of her career high. Chelsea Bramlett, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, added her 13th-straight game with a base hit, going 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. She also stole a season-high four bases in the contest, giving her 17-straight steals on the year and a school fifth-most 25 consecutive stolen bases going back to last season.
State struck with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Bramlett sparked the inning by walking on four-straight pitches.
The Cordova, Tenn., native stole second and came home on sophomore Ka'ili Smith's two-out base hit. Jessie Bailey scored Smith with the inning's final run as she lined a double to the wall in right-center.
Troy had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the bottom of the first as a walk and a pair of hit batsmen loaded the bases. Bulldog starter Kylie Vry, however, got a fly-out to end the threat.
"We did a good job of scoring right off the bat and keeping the pressure on," MSU head coach Jay Miller said. "We got some big two-out hits today. Ka'ili and Jessie Bailey stepped up and drove in some big runs with two outs. Kylie had a great shutout performance, and our defense did a really nice job today. We are off to a good start in the tournament, and hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow."
Bramlett punched across another run in the third to extend the Dawgs' lead to 3-0. She opened the inning with an infield base hit. The throw to first sailed wide, allowing her to advance to second.
After stealing her second base of the game, she scored on Courtney Nesbit's fly ball to shallow right field.
The Dawgs put the game away with a five-run fourth inning. Ali Bainbridge was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and she moved to second on an Erin Nesbit sacrifice. Allie Heon followed with a blooping single to left field.
Bainbridge scored on an illegal pitch to put MSU up 4-0. Heon, who took third on the pitch after advancing to second on her base hit, scored as Bramlett bounced a single up the middle. Bramlett stole second before Jessie Spain walked, and a double-steal moved Bramlett and pinch-runner Jessica Cooley to third and second, respectively.
With two outs in the frame, Smith cleared the bases with a triple to the wall in right-center. The Kapolei, Hawaii, native gave the Bulldogs the 8-0 advantage as she came home on a wild pitch by Troy starter Ashlyn Williams.
Williams fell to 9-4 on the year as she allowed the eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts over four innings. Sally Ward tossed the final frame, giving up a walk and striking out one.
Sarah Harris collected the Trojans' lone hit of the game, a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth.
Mississippi State returns to action on Saturday, facing Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m. and Wright State at 4 p.m. Admission to all MSU home softball games is free.
