MSU Track Closes Out Alabama Relays With More Top Finishes
March 28, 2010 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Mississippi State men's and women's track and field teams closed out a great weekend at the Alabama Relays by capturing two more event titles Sunday. The Bulldogs won both the 4x200-meter and the 4x400-meter relays.
"We ran pretty well today and the 4x4 was good, but we held back a little for Texas (Relays)," head coach Al Schmidt said. "The 4x2 has a real chance to win next week, and it was good to get that under our belt. We left a lot of time on the clock in the handoffs so we've got some work to do to fix those, but it was good to get a win against SEC teams."
Bulldog quartet D'Angelo Cherry, Kendall May, Justin Christian and Dwight Mullings ran 1 minute, 23.37 seconds to win the 4x200-meter relay event crown. While O'Neal Wilder, Emmanuel Mayers Deaundre Barnaby and Tavaris Tate ran a season-best 3:07.49 to win the 4x400-meter relay title.
State's 4x100-meter relay team, May, Tate, Mullings, and Cherry just missed the winner's circle and finished second in 40.36 seconds.
The Lady Bulldog relay teams also shined on their last day at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex, finishing in the Top 3 in the 4x100-meter, 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle, 4x400-meter and distance medley relays.
"I thought the girls ran pretty well today," Schmidt said. "We were about 85 percent on the relays, but both Taneisha (Baker) and Richesa (McCaleb) ran pretty good for us today."
LaQuinta Aaron, Keisha Wallace, Taleisha Lee and Jessica Merriweather ran 57.95 seconds to finish third in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, while Wendy Copeland, Taneisha Baker, Wallace and Richesa McCaleb ran 46.23 seconds en route to a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.
"We had some bad luck on one leg of the shuttle hurdle relay, but I think we have the chance at having one of the best hurdle relays in the country by the time we get to Penn (Relays)," Schmidt added.
MSU's 4x400-meter relay team, Brittany Covington, Jody-Ann Muir, Racquel Farquharson and Baker finished second in the event in 3:43.82. In the distance medley relay, State recorded a third-place finish in 12:07.63.
"Over all we had a really good day, and we are capable of winning some relays next week in Texas," Schmidt said.
State track and field teams have a short week and begin competition at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin Wednesday, March 31.
