MSU Track And Field Win Two Titles At Alabama Relays
March 26, 2010 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Mississippi State remained on top of the leader board Friday to close out the multi-event competition at the 2010 Alabama Relays as sophomore Martin Lee scored 6,865 points to take the decathlon and senior LaQuinta Aaron totaled 5,069 points to win the heptathlon.
"They both are Alabama Relay Champions," head coach Al Schmidt said. "They did a good job today."
Lee took the lead from teammate Trevarus Christian, who finished fourth with 6,365 points, after registering Top 5 finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (15.63 seconds), pole vault (13 feet, 3.50 inches), discus throw (120-08) and 1500-meter run (4:49.65). Lee's final point total moved him to 5th all-time in MSU history and a new personal best.
"Martin had a great day today," Schmidt said. "His first-place finish is a big PR. The lead changed about five times in the competition, and he took it after the pole vault and kept it."
Aaron opened day two of the heptathlon by quickly continuing to separate herself from the rest of the field. She finished first in both the long jump (18-11.75) and 800-meter run (2:28.21) to win the event by a commanding 491 points. Freshman Racquel Farquharson also competed in the heptathlon and finished 10th.
"For most of the heptathlon the conditions were very windy like they were yesterday," Schmidt said. "But LaQuinta was able to do very very well and pull out a win."
Individual events get underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m., and MSU has a lot of athletes competing in their primary events for the first time this season.
"Tomorrow we've got a lot of kids opening up in their primary events and looking to get solid first round NCAA marks," Schmidt said. "It's a big day for us, and I think our kids are capable of getting the marks needed to get to the first round of NCAAAs and beyond."
